@orlandomuseumofart This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the art of JEFRË, a Filipino-American artist from Chicago, IL.

As a first generation American whose parents immigrated from the Philippines, JEFRË has experienced the many opportunities of living in the United States along with challenges that include confronting prejudice and ignorance regarding his heritage.

“Rice Field” is a reflection on that heritage, his family’s immigration and the nature of life’s journey.

The undulating topography of the rice suggests ocean waves or the rolling hills of an Asian landscape, suggesting the obstacles and effort required for the journey.

Thirteen bands of white and brown rice reference the flag of the United States. The formal geometry of the stripes in the foreground dissolve into meandering pathways as they recede across the field.

Soon, I’ll be leaving for an exciting residency (more on that to come), and these are the last days I can meet people in person to talk about this very large, site-specific, ephemeral drawing inspired by my bike rides through the Everglades. The exhibition will be on view until May 18th, 2024.

This project combines the lost art of letter writing with community engagement in a visual and emotionally conscious display of love letters. Handwritten letters to themselves as they currently identify in society, i.e. Dear Black Gay Man, Dear Fierce Queen, Dear Chloe, Dear Shaun, etc. are encouraging and sensitive to self-identity, self-awareness, and most importantly self-love. With the current state of society with Florida “Don’t Say Gay Bill”, the youth in our communities are the ones feeling the effects of our government the most. Our focus is to offer emotional and mental aid to those impacted by the current political upheaval that’s disrupting their joy. Come enjoy an evening with food, music, performances, and the revealing of each visual art piece inspired by each letter.

Lamorisse gave his illusions the conviction of reality, and he made the real world seem as miraculous as myth. His eye transformed what it fell on, unlocking the extraordinary. Posted @withregram • @chiharushiota The group show “Franz Kafka: 1924” at Museum Villa Stuck @villastuck in Munich, Germany has opened this week. The installation “During Sleep” is presented at the exhibition, which deals with dream, reality and everything in-between. Sleeping is similar to dying. When we sleep our consciousness is absent. We do not know reality in our sleep. I often think about the Taoist text ‘The Butterfly Dream’ by Zhuang Zhou. Within the text, a man dreamt he was a butterfly, but when he awoke from this dream, he could not say if he is a man who dreamt of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man. I believe sleeping and dreaming are strongly connected, and they are an important foundation for our sense of reality.
