My work is reliant on design fundamentals: form, color, and composition; I believe the most intricate emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms.

My “style” explores the idea of recognizable shapes and structures living within irrational thoughts and emotions…. I begin a piece very spontaneously and become more detailed as the composition starts to show itself. The process involves layering; the first layers are the most erratic and freeform, similar to automatic writing. There are no preliminary sketches or notions of what is going to emerge, and different characters and quirky forms become apparent in the middle of the process, which I then nurture and develop to create a harmonious composition of controlled chaos. Sharp diagonals in my work are meant to evoke a sense of motion.

Jessica Alvarez was born in Honduras; her father’s work in the United Nations led her to reside in eight different countries throughout South America, Central America and Europe, ultimately arriving in South Florida where she received a BA in Art History and a BFA in Mixed Media Art from Florida International University. Her photographic and mixed-media work has been shown at the Dorsch Gallery in Miami, the Catalina Hotel on South Beach, throughout various venues in Palm Beach County including The Lounge on Clematis, Kyoto’s Sake and Sushi, The David K Space, The Style Bar, Kavasutra, Segaffredo’s on South Beach, Art Basel Satellite Show sponsored by BeScene Magazine, Howley’s Restaurant, Tate’s Comics, and multiple live showcases and local art fairs and festivals.
